  • Claire’s Corner Copia, 1000 Chapel St. Offers coffee, tea, pastries, breakfast; kosher dairy vegetarian restaurant that offers vegan and gluten-free options. Hours vary, but open 8 a.m. on weekdays. *Staff favorite!
  • Union League Patisserie, 1042 Chapel St, New Haven. Coffee, tea, French pastry. Hours vary, but open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. most days.
  • Willoughby’s Coffee & Tea, 194 York St. Coffee, tea, pastries. 7 or 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Starbucks, 1068-1070 Chapel St. Coffee and snacks. 5 a.m. to 9 p.m.
  • Chap’s Grille, 1174 Chapel St. Middle Eastern restaurant with a diner-style breakfast menu. 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

QUICK, (RELATIVELY) CHEAP LUNCHES

Check for open hours and menu (and ratings) before heading out. We looked for good/decent reviews on Google Maps and a range of prices up to $20 either by their listing or based on a quick skim of the menu. (You’re on your own for lunch on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday; you may also want to grab dinner on your own before the opening keynote on Wednesday, as the included food is dessert afterward.   • Ninth Square Market Too Caribbean Style, 89 George St. Vegan Caribbean. Noon or 12:30 most days.
  • Cookbop, Korean: Tang, gukpop, pancake. 128 Crown St. Noon to 10 p.m.
  • Cedarhurst Café, 44 Crown St. Breakfast, lunch, fair-trade coffee and smoothies. 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Louis’ Lunch, 261 Crown St. Small spot that claims to have invented the hamburger, served plainly. Opens at noon.
  • Rubamba Restaurant, 25 High St. Tacos, quesadillas, burritos, arepas (Colombian and Venezuelan). 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
  • Pokémoto – New Haven (Chapel), 1145 Chapel St. Pre-set and build-your-own Hawaiian bowls; vegan options. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

 

Stretching the five-block radius…

  • Choupette Crêperie & Cafè, 24 Whitney Ave. Sweet and savory crepes and salads. A staff favorite! 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Bella Casa Vegana, 9 Whitney Ave. Wraps, salads, pizza, pasta; menu items generally over $20. 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
  • Super Sandwich, 302 Crown St. Sandwiches, including vegetarian and plant-based options. 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Yale University Commons Dining Hall, 168 Grove St. Magic-school-ish architecture, college cafeteria food; a meal ticket is $15. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. It will only be open Thursday while you’re at Sirens, and still may be closed for spring break. 
  • Yorkside Pizza & Restaurant, 288 York St. Greek diner. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • Shah’s Halal Food, 286 York St. Gyros, platters, sandwiches. 10 a.m. to midnight or later.
  • Junzi Kitchen, 21 Broadway. Healthy northern Chinese. 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
  • A LITTLE FARTHER and a bit more expensive: Sally’s Apizza, 237 Wooster St. Iconic New Haven-style pizza; pronounce this well-baked version ahBEETZ. 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. (Another icon, Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana, is just beyond at 157 Wooster St.)
  • IF YOU HAVE A CAR: search “Food Truck Paradise” for a waterfront collection of Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Tex-Mex, and other mobile restaurants. (No seating or restrooms.)

     

FIELD TRIPS

Need to get out of here for a while? Some of these locations are within a few blocks; others might require a car or bus ride.

  • The New Haven Green is located across Chapel Street, and has paved and dirt paths.
  • Yale Old Campus is located on the west side of New Haven Green.
  • Grove St Cemetery is the first chartered US burial ground, and has many notable graves, at 227 Grove St.
  • Knit New Haven is a staff-favorite yarn store at 26 Whitney Ave.
  • Witch Bitch Thrift: LGBTQ-, Latino-, and woman-owned thrifting at 105 Whitney Ave.
  • Yale Peabody Museum at 170 Whitney Ave is a free natural history museum.
  • Possible Futures at 318 Edgewood Ave is a fantastic progressive bookstore.
  • Mew Haven Cat Café at 904 Whalley Ave WILL let you pet that dog cat.
  • FYI: the New Haven Pride Center closed as of February 26. ☹
